Base camp for Footpath Journeys is in Canyon de Chelly Arizona in the heart of the Navajo reservation. The nearest airport is Albuquerque (Phoenix Airport, while in the same state as Canyon de Chelly, is actually farther away). The drive to Chinle is approximately 4-5 hours.

View a map of the area. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. The best map of the four corners area to purchase is called Indian Country and can be purchased at the local motels, galleries, etc. as well as the Albuquerque airport. It's published by the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Transporting Gear

For large groups staying with Footpath Journeys while visiting Canyon De Chelly, we provide a pickup truck to collect your luggage and camping gear at the airport. This means you can reduce expenses by renting fewer vehciles to get your group to the Canyon.

This service includes gas, a driver, packing and unpacking of the truck. A waiver form must be signed by all participants who use this service.

Round trip service to and from the Albuquerque International Sunport Airport is $600.

Other designated meeting places can be arranged. The fee is $1.25/mile, with rates begining from the home base in Canyon De Chelly.

If you require an add-on trailer for more storage, the fee is $1.75/mile.

Motels

Chinle has several very fine motels, including:

  • Best Western Canyon De Chelly Inn, 100 Main St Route 7, Chinle, AZ 86503, (520-674-5288)
  • Holiday Inn, RR 7 Box 191, Chinle, AZ 86503, (520-674-5000)

You can reserve online on a number of different travel sites or call for reservations.
