Getting There

Base camp for Footpath Journeys is in Canyon de Chelly Arizona in the heart of the Navajo reservation. Albuquerque Sun-port is the nearest International Airport to Canyon De Chelly, it is 480 miles Round Trip, approximately 3 ½- 4 hours away from Canyon De Chelly. (Phoenix Airport, while in the same state as Canyon de Chelly, is actually farther away).

The best map of the four corners area to purchase is called Indian Country and can be purchased at the local motels, galleries, etc. as well as the Albuquerque airport. It's published by the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Transporting Gear

For large groups staying with Footpath Journeys while visiting Canyon De Chelly, we provide a pickup truck to collect your luggage and camping gear at the airport. This means you can reduce expenses by renting fewer and smaller vehicles to get your group to the Canyon.

More importantly, the money then goes to support the Canyon De Chelly economy rather than a large national car rental agency. The groups who have used this service appreciate its convenience and the fact that they are supporting local residents.

  • This service is for transportation from the Albuquerque airport, to Canyon de Chelley, and back to the airport. (For our visitors this is a single round trip, but our staff actually drives two round trips to the airport, for a total of 480 miles.)
  • This service includes gas, a driver, packing and unpacking of the truck.
  • A waiver form must be signed by all participants who use this service for their luggage/gear/personal items.
  • Other designated meeting places can be arranged.

Cost:

  • The fee is $2.90 per mile.
  • For example, your round trip from the airport to Canyon de Chelly and back to the Albuquerque airport is $2.90 x 480 = $1392.
  • If you require an add-on trailer for more storage room, the fee is $4.50 per mile.
